2017-18 5th Graders Outside of the White House

The Fifth Grade class of West Oaks Elementary made their annual trip to the nation’s capital, Washington, D.C, on May 17, 2018. The students and chaperones were transported to Washington, D.C by a 16-hour bus ride, through North Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina and Virginia.  This was the second West Oaks Elementary fifth grade class to make this trip.

While in the capital, the students visited several Smithsonian Museums, including the National Air and Space Museum and the National Museum of African-American History and Culture. The group visited multiple memorials, which included the Lincoln Memorial and the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial. The students also were able to visit one of our nation’s historical black universities when they walked the campus of Howard University.  The fifth graders were given an oral history of HBCUs and several students were inspired to learn more about Howard University. The trip also included a visit to the National Zoo, where the students were able to see adaptations first hand. Trying to locate a boa constrictor in its case really brings home that lesson on camouflage.

The students got a chance to experience all three branches of U.S government. They took part in the tour of the U.S Capitol Building for the Legislative Branch. The Judicial Branch was covered by a visit to the U.S Supreme Court, which also included a 30-minute lecture in the Supreme Court Courtroom. The Executive Branch was experienced with a visit to the White House grounds.  The students also got a chance to experience the history of the U.S Military during a visit to Arlington National Cemetery. There, the students witnessed the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Solider.

The three-day experience in Washington, D.C was an activity-filled learning and cultural experience that these students and chaperones will never forget. West Oaks Elementary would like to thank ATL Travel and Mrs. Richardson for organizing the trip, and also, thank Escot Bus Lines for providing safe and professional transportation to, around and from the “DMV.” The “DMV” stands for the Washington, D.C, Maryland, and Virginia metro area, and we can’t wait to take next year’s fifth grade class.
